There are several things that you need to consider when good friends make the decision to get into a romantic relationship. The first thing that you should both think about is the possibility of losing each other as friends if the relationship doesn?t work out. Despite this being a difficult decision to make, the last thing that you want is to live your life pretending to be just friends, and getting hurt each time your friend starts to date someone else.
How to overcome the awkward stage
Making such a transition is not going to be easy, in fact it can be quite awkward. To make things easier between the two of you, have a discussion about addressing the changes to the dynamic of your friendship. You should both have an understanding that your new relationship is going to alter the way you interact with each other.
Terri Apter, an author, and professor at the University of Cambridge states that; ?the friendship between a man and a women is often a passionate one that is rarely simple. As with any human interaction, there are a range of emotions involved.? You should discuss how your interactions will change physically and emotionally, and make an agreement that if the relationship does not work out then you will remain friends.
Now that you have made the decision to start dating, you should treat each other as a date and not as a friend. Start doing things that you would typically do on a date, and take each other to romantic places. Make each other feel special every time you are together by complimenting one another, and talking about how happy you are that you decided to get into a relationship.
Tell your mutual friends
If you both share mutual friends, you should tell them early on. The last thing that you want is for them to feel as if you have been keeping secrets from them. As much as you don?t want it to, your relationship is going to have an effect on the way you interact as a group, and the sooner everyone is made to feel comfortable with your relationship the better.

Be prepared for some negative reaction, you may encounter jealousy, shock and even anger. Your friends will start to give opinions about your relationships whether they have been asked to or not. When you start dating someone, you turn to your friends for advice and guidance in your relationship; however, this is not a good idea when you share the same friends, as anything you say can easily be repeated back to your date, making things uncomfortable.
Going to events as a couple
Not only should you go out on dates, but you should also go to events such as weddings and parties as a couple. The whole idea of making a transition is that you start acting as a couple as well as friends. If not, your friendship will stay the same and essentially turn into a ?friends with benefits? type of relationship. The benefit of being in a relationship where you were once friends is that you are already comfortable with each other, meaning that you can talk freely about the state of your relationship; communication is essential in any relationship, but even more so when you are in such a complex relationship.

If you are both serious about making your relationship work then there is no reason why it shouldn?t. One of the most important things to remember is that you should continue to nurture your bond as friends before your relationship turned into a romantic one.
