Twenty eight years later, it remains one of the most famous things she’s ever said. Asked on “American Bandstand” by TV icon Dick Clark, who died on Wednesday at the age of 82, “What do you hope will happen, not only in 1984 but for the rest of your professional life? What are your dreams? What’s left?” Madonna answered simply, famously and with characteristic directness.

“To rule the world,” she said without hesitation. And that’s what she went on to do … well, the pop world anyway.

She was on “Bandstand,” ostensibly, to perform “Holiday” and promote her self-titled debut, which was released a few months earlier in the summer of 1983, but in retrospect it feels like she was really there to prepare the world for what was coming. Like a Virgin dropped later that same year, and with its release Madonna went from being a well-liked and charismatic pop tart with a few radio hits to the most famous female singer on the planet.

The “Bandstand” crowd went wild for then-25-year-old Madonna’s performance, and Clark had a hard time getting a word in. When everyone finally settled down, he asked Madonna about her burgeoning career, including her early years in New York and touring Paris with “Born to Be Alive” singer Patrick Hernandez. “He offered me a tour with him as a background singer and a dancer,” Madonna told Clark. “So I jumped on that boat and got into the music industry that way and started writing songs, and here I am.”

As news of Clark’s passing began to surface, fans started posting the clip all over Twitter and soon enough, Madonna’s herself chimed in, posting the video to her Facebook page with the message, “Even though I told him in 1984 that I wanted to rule the world, it’s Dick Clark who has ruled the world.”

While “Bandstand” wasn’t her first TV appearance and Clark certainly didn’t discover Madonna — she already had a top-five hit with “Lucky Star” by the time she appeared — her visit to the show feels like the first seminal event in what went on to be one of the most legendary careers in pop-culture history. It’s where things really began, months before she took the stage in a wedding dress at the first-ever MTV Video Music Awards.

It’s also a real showcase for the Madonna many fans love most. Playful, natural, beautiful and — most importantly — brimming with confidence, it’s no surprise the emerging pop star on display on “Bandstand” that night went on to score 38 top tens, more than any performer in music history, 12 #1 singles and eight #1 albums, the latest of which, MDNA, debuted in the top spot 28 years, two months and 20 days after her visit to “American Bandstand.”

Today, many will be looking back on Dick Clark’s many achievements and dissecting the almost immeasurable impact he had on music and television, and we’ll remember for how genuinely excited he seemed to be talking to a little-known disco singer on January 14, 1984. His decision to invite her on that night quite literally changed the face of pop music forever, and for that we will always be thankful.

The death of pop-culture icon Dick Clark has hit the entertainment world especially hard. Moments after news broke that the producer, radio personality and “American Bandstand” and “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” host had died of a heart attack at age 82, some of showbiz’s biggest names expressed their sadness over the loss.

Ryan Seacrest, who has long been Clark’s heir apparent, having taken over the hosting duties on his “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve,” said in a statement, “I am deeply saddened by the loss of my dear friend Dick Clark. He has truly been one of the greatest influences in my life. I idolized him from the start, and I was graced early on in my career with his generous advice and counsel. When I joined his show in 2006, it was a dream come true to work with him every New Year’s Eve for the last 6 years. He was smart, charming, funny and always a true gentleman. I learned a great deal from him, and I’ll always be indebted to him for his faith and support of me. He was a remarkable host and businessman and left a rich legacy to television audiences around the world. We will all miss him.”

Carson Daly, who has also taken career cues from Clark, said in a statement: “We lost an icon today. I will always cherish the personal time we had together. I am forever indebted to Dick Clark and his legacy. My heart goes out to his family.”

The love for Clark seems to defy genre, as his work on TV helped very diverse artists break into the mainstream. Russell Simmons tweeted, “Dick Clark was eternally young. No matter what culturally phenomenon was happening, he always embraced it. RIP…”

An MTV VP recalls his first job in television, working for the late Dick Clark.

Snoop Dogg added, “REST IN PEACE to the DICK CLARK!! U were pioneer n a good man!! Thank u sir.”

Big Boi simply tweeted a photo of him and Outkast partner Andre 3000 standing alongside Clark, with the message “R.I.P Dick Clark.”

Like Big Boi, “Weird Al” Yankovic also posted a photo of himself with the TV host, writing, “Such sad news. RIP Dick Clark.”

Certainly his influence on merging music and television can be seen on TV today, especially on shows like “Glee.” “A sad day as we have lost Dick Clark, an American Icon. You will be missed,” one of the show’s stars, Matthew Morrison, tweeted.

His loss is also felt by the pop world, with ’80s boy banders New Kids on the Block tweeting, “#RIPDickClark. A true music maverick. You will be missed.”

Their tourmates, the Backstreet Boys, added, ‏”Our hearts go out 2 Dick Clark’s family. The memories u’ve created will live forever & r experiences w/ u is something we will cherish 4 all r lives.”

Kings of Leon’s Jared Followill seemed surprised by the news, writing, “R.I.P. Dick Clark? Say it ain’t so…”

Madonna’s manager Guy Oseary also tweeted about Clark’s death. Back in the early ’80s, just as Madge was taking her career to the next level, she famously declared on “Bandstand” that her ultimate goal was “to rule the world.” Linking to a clip of that 1984 appearance, Oseary wrote, “Rest in Peace DIck Clark …”

We’re afraid we’ve got some bad news. Transformer Prime users outside of America and Taiwan in Italy and Greece won’t receive a GPS dongle to address their tablet’s lackluster mapping performance. The company confirmed on its Italian Facebook page that while it was advertised in the US and Taiwan as having “Full GPS,” once issues were found, the European advertising was changed to read “GPS Locator” — in short: it’s not its problem, go away. We’ve included a machine-translated version below so you can hear it from the horse’s mouth Facebook wall and we apologize in advance for any errors.

“Guys confirm that the initiative is reserved for those territories where Prime was marketed with the GPS between the specifications of the product. So mainly the U.S. and Taiwan. In Italy Prime was marketed with a GPS locator, and not with a “Full” as car navigation. Function that we believe the rest is useless in combination with a tablet. Customers who bought Prime has done with the understanding that GPS is not present, then from our side there were no broken promises or misleading claims. Update: Looks like there’s some confusion between the company’s Italian arm and the rest of Europe. Readers have forwarded links to various European-country pages to apply for a dongle before July 31st this year.

Update 2: ASUS got in touch to clarify the position, saying that only customers in Italy and Greece won’t be able to get GPS dongles, but all other customers are invited to check if they’re eligible on the official website (More Coverage), adding that

“ASUS Global would like to further clarify that we’re always committed to delivering the best experience for our customers through regular software updates and, where necessary, accessories like the GPS Extension Kit.”

The restraint of the acting druing intense and hightly charged emotions is ultimately much more moving than big melodramatic screeching histrionics. Algerian comedian Felag gives an unforgettable performance as a man who manages to suggest a devastating back story without actually spelling out what it is. So he is uniquely qualified to help the children with their grief. However, the plot situations themselves are either extremely unlikely (and unbelievable) or not properly explained. Let’s start with why a beloved teacher (albeit with mental problems) would hang herself in a school room during a school day. I might buy that if given some detail of what this teacher was all about, but it remains a mystery. Then let’s wonder why a responsible principal would hire a guy off the street as a teacher, not check one credential on his CV in a very PC and formalized school system? The film suffers in its second half (Act 3 for all you budding screenwriters) with some quick leaps to resolve things. We are also cheated out of some relationships that have developed too quickly – for example, the special bond between Lazhar and Alice, one of his students who has helped deal with her grief. This may be because it is based on a short one man play written by Quebec playwright Evelyne De La Cheniere, who appears as Alice’s mother, an airline pilot. Some of those leaps in a one act monologue need to be filled in for a full length film and Felardeau has failed to do that. (Or scenes are lying on the cutting room floor – I know there is NO cutting room floor anymore – that I don’t know about. )However, Felardeau has done so many things right, that his film richly deserves its Academy Award nomination. Whatever carping I did the previous paragraph should not deter anyone from wanting to see this wonderful film.

As per a recent research, it has been revealed that a new treatment has been developed, which will help prostate cancer patients to avoid the side effects, which occur due to other conventional cancer treatments.

The treatment known as high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) was developed at the University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and University College London. Lead researcher Dr. Hashim Ahmed was of the view that the treatment treats tumor quite closely, and such proximity is not possible in any other treatment.

This closeness helps healthy tissues to remain safe, and also helps them from other probable dangers. It is not the first time that such kind of treatment is used, but it is the first time that the HIFU is used to treat early stages of prostate cancer.

Ahmed said that there are many side effects of traditional treatments and some of them being incontinence, impotence and there can be many other side effects like nerve damage. However, nothing of such kind has been found in the new treatment.

?We?re optimistic that men diagnosed with prostate cancer may soon be able to undergo a day case surgical procedure, which can be safely repeated once or twice, to treat their condition with very few side-effects?, said Ahmed.

He further affirmed that their experiment revealed that nine in ten achieved best results and none of the 41men suffered from incontinence. Moreover, it was found that 95% volunteers were free from cancer after the treatment and only one person suffered from impotence and that too after 12 months.

The procedure is not at all time consuming and patient is released after 24 hours of the surgery. Ahmed said that further trials need to be taken out.
